Ex-employer refusing letter of recommendation after redundancy

So after being made redundant in September and I have a trial day for a new company tomorrow who have asked for a letter of recommendation.
I asked my ex-line manager if he could do one for me, 3 days later and 12 hours before I need it, I found out he “wasn't allowed to as their policy is to just say that you worked there”
I really want this job, what do I do???

  • Try to get the reference froms someone else, be honest if you can't. If your new potential has common sense, they shouldn't make a huge deal. Being honest in these situations works best.
  • As Fi said, it's pretty standard policy these days for employers to only confirm that you worked for them, the dates and in what capacity. Can you ask someone else for a personal character reference and would your new employer accept that together with the confirmation of your last role?
  • This is normal I’m afraid. It’s to prevent being sued later by an ex employee who feels that they didn’t get a good reference. Your interviewer should be aware.
