Hello, does anyone have any advice on how to run a photography Instagram account? How do you reach a wider audience?

  • I was recently shown this video. It's mainly about growing a following, not photography specifcally however, there are a few good points to take away from it.

  • These are all great advice ! But I also think you should embrace experimentation and share work on how you feel about them and not how you think people are react to it (like is this shoot going to bring me more followers rather than this one)
  • As Tamara said, engagement is key, you have to try and bring as much attention to your page as possible. Post regularly, and post stories frequently, as this makes your account more visable to your followers/perspective followers and increases your interactions, and therefore overall engagement rate (you can follow this on websites such as Phalanx or SocialBlade, over 10k you also get basic in-app analytics).
Content-wise, I would say finding your style is important so it is coherent, and plan out how your posts will look before you post them, as when a new person first views your account, they see its general appearence before the individual photos, so the profile needs to look nice at a quick glance (there is a good app called Preview which lets you pre-plan your posts before you post them).
Proper use of hashtags is a big help, try and find popular hashtags surrounding your aestethic, you can have 30 per post so its good to make use of all of them (there are a few websites that help you with this by you putting in some keywords and it gves you a list of related popular hashtags). Try and be broad but directional with them, but also not vastly broad, if that makes sense.
You can also premote posts, and specifically choose the audience you want to reach. This obviously costs money, but it can definitely speed up your growth, and target the people you want to be aiming at.
I would say these are the most important aspects, but you just have to keep working at it and people will come. Just keep engaging, and make your profile as viewable as possible. Good luck with it and I hope some of that helped a bit!
  • Engage with other photographers and create your own network. I often message others across platforms to gather inspiration and feedback on works etc. Follow people that interest you and your practice
