Hello! My husband has spent the last 6 months learning to code but with no experience is finding it hard to get work...any ideas? Thanks!

Languages were HTMLs, CCS3, Jvascript, NodeJS, AJAX, Ruby on Rails, MongoDB and Mysql.
We're based in Toulon in the south of France and all of the companies he's approached require at least 2/3 years of experience so he's losing the will to live and is thinking of going back to sales to make some money.
Is there a community of coders on here that can give advice / moral support?!
Thanks again,
Abi

  • Alot of the projects I see on Creative Scotland seem to involve web development. Is that somewhere your husband could look or maybe is there a French equivalent?

  • @Tom Valorsa Hey Tom, thanks for coming back to me! He does indeed have a portfolio / GitHub thingy (https://houseofhaidary.netlify.app/), I guess it's just a tough market with a lot of competition?
I'll pass on your suggestions anyway and also get him to have a look on The Dots as it seems like a brilliant place to meet like minded folks.
    Cheers!

  • Hey Abi, sounds like a tough situation.

The good thing about stuff like coding is that you have the advantage of being able to quantify what you can do and show it off. Does your husband have anything by way of a portfolio?

Even one project to show the breadth of his learning would be super useful for employers to get some signal on his abilities. In case you're not already aware, if you put code on a site like GitHub you can share it publically (and just send a link to potential employers).

It doesn’t necessarily have to be super original either. For example, people seem to get good mileage out of making simple clones of popular sites (e.g. Twitter) as the focus is more on showing knowledge/use of the technologies that are used when building a web app.

    Best of luck!
