Hi all, has anyone had any experience in using an umbrella company for a freelance gig? Any good ones? Any bad ones?

- Avoid if you can. They take a big chunk of your potential earning. If you going to be doing freelancing on a long term basis, you should set up a limited company.
- @LINDSAY FAGAN ahhh! I see thats good to know and thank u so much for replying. Really good to know! Thank you. :)
- @Melisa Lee it depends when the company you're working for pay them. I had to wait a while because there was a problem in communication between the client and compass, but they were chasing as much as they could and were great at communication with me, the client finance dept were at fault with that issue.
- @LINDSAY FAGAN thats good to know! Do they pay on time? Heard so many horror stories…
- I use compass, I like em because they actually care about freelancers getting a fair deal and only take about £20 fee per payslip. Have a chat with them and they’ll chat you through joining. Oh and they don’t force you to run all your business through them too!https://compasscontracting.co.uk/umbrella-contractors/
- @Mike Andrews thanks for letting me know and the advice. They sound like a nightmare!
- blegh avoid if u can, they sort out the taxes but take quite a big cut. if you’re thinking of freelancing long term it’s probably worth starting a ltd company
