  • Hey Kinga, great question! I think you'll find that most magazine editors are always open to pitches and suggestions, you just need to find who they are, what they are looking for, and pitch them interesting, relevant ideas.

Most magazines will have their editors listed on one of the pages - often with their email addresses, or you might need to find them online / connect with them if they are on The Dots etc. If you don't hear back from the main editor (they get hundreds of emails a week), perhaps try a junior editor or a section editor ('arts editor' for example).

If you don't yet have much experience / a portfolio of published articles, you might get more chance pitching to lesser known / less popular titles and websites, rather than going straight to the popular ones. Or, do both :)

When I was an editor, I'd get loads of generic 'Hi, I'm a writer' pitches, which were not very helpful. Do your research into the magazine / publication / website, the kinds of things they write, the relevant word counts, and send some examples of your past relevant writing that would suit their publication and style.

The main thing they are looking for though is ideas The easier you can make it for them, the more likely you are to get comissioned. So it's a good idea to list a couple of article ideas in your personalised email to them. What's the story? What's the angle? Do you have a contact? How is it interesting to their readers and relevant to their publication.

    Hope that helps!
