Hi, I have a BA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography but I’m struggling to find jobs that I think I would be good at.

I don’t think I’m creative/confident enough to do freelance stuff and I am kind of at a bit of dead end as to what I can do. I’m stuck. I look at jobs and I am completely under qualified for any of them and don’t really know what to do.

  • Hi Joe!

Sorry to hear you’re struggling to get your footing with regard to your creative path - it’ll come with time and trying out different areas within the industry.

I run a Photo Lab in Notting Hill and we’re currently looking for students/young professionals interested in photography to help us out with our social media marketing - if you think you’d be interested in copywriting / taking photos / marketing strategy, drop us a message!
  • Hi Joe

I'd start doing side gigs while having full time jobs, they could be unrelated to what you studied, but will cover your expenses while you work on your portfolio and ideas. Photograph/write about the genre you like doing and that will get you through.

Assisting, volunteering, contributing to charities will all help you get experience and contacts - you can find these opportunities here asking people, checking Linkedin, Facebook groups - eg. London Photographers and Videographers and others.

It's all a journey, wish you good luck and get in touch if you have questions.

    Cheers

    Kat

  • Hey Joe!
I feel sorry to hear you are struggling with your creative path, I guess we all been there. I always recomend to start asssiting other photographers, its the best way to get into the industry and understand how it works. You might not always get paid jobs, but you will learn a lot and surely build your confidence. Feel free to ask if you have any questions and good luck!
  • My biggest advice is to create work you like first and build a little portfolio, literally go out with your camera (if you have one) and shoot, read also so you find stories you wish to tell.
And lastly put your work out there,
Also look out for photo assisting opportunities- jump on set assisting more established photographers and you should earn more about navigating through the industry

Ultimately yeah it’s gonna be a few volunteering and investing in your work first and then doors should start to open from there,
Best also to get a part time job to support/sponsors your ideas

Hope all this helps somehow and good luck!
