I have 0 experience of the creative industry (particular interests are styling & art direction) what is the best way to break into it?

I would love to begin working towards being a fashion stylist on set for magazines or for tv or music videos but my background is not in fashion so i don't have a portfolio or the knowlege on how to build one. Does anyone know if any jobs exist where you can assist stylists/learn on the job/shadow stylists or even art directors? Or should i be starting out somewhere else, if so any ideas?

Once i'm earning enough i aim to pay to take some online short courses with UAL surrounding these areas so i have the relevant knowledge to aid my work. I'm also planning on returning to doing nail art, but professionally this time, as being a session manicurist is something that also really appeals to me.

  • Hi Keisha,

I am working on my final masters project at London College of Fashion. The project is focusing on the underrepresentation of black people in societal power positions whilst analysing how they are represented. Inspiration has been drawn from politicians, musicians, lawyers etc.

I’d be interested in having you on board as a nail manicurist/artist. It’ll be exhibited and I will be submitting to publications.

Feel free to DM me on Instagram for more details: https://Instagram.com/suzzyparlaa

I’m shooting this week Friday, so let me know if you’d like to join :)
  • If you are able to, why not! any experience helps.
But try and stay focus on your goal without wasting energy. I think the competition as a persona lshopper will be already pretty hard, so it might require a lot of energy to get into the field, if that's not the final goal. Hope I explained myself clearly! good luck
  • @Giulia Vigna Thank you so much for your respone! I'm going to definitely look into doing this and the great thing is i have a lot of creative friends so i'm sure they would be will to help me. Do you think it would be worth pursuing a job as a personal shopper alongside doing this as a source of income and to get some experience with styling a variety of individuals?
  • Definitely try and do as much work as you can. Collaborate with a photographer and a model that are just beginning too and make something. Offer to style very lowbudget webseries or music video, that will probably be happy to give you the job since they have no budget. Unfortunately at the beginning it's going to be hard - you have to make a portfolio and most of it will be unpaid work, but if you manage it well enough you'll be able to make it work around your schedule.
