I'm a recent design graduate and I'm currently freelancing as it’s my only option at the minute but I’m struggling ...

I am experiencing a lot of burnout, have no routine and I’m suffering a lot from imposter syndrome. My clients are positive and happy with the work I make for them but I’m struggling a lot as I’ve never worked in an agency. I don’t know whether I should try and get a mentor or if there’s anything else I could do to improve things because at the moment  it’s my only source of income and need the work.

  • Hi Sinead,

I'm sure a lot of people can relate to how you feel right now. If you keep moving forward, though, things will almost certainly get better.

Listen to this on imposter syndrome: https://www.instructorhq.com/podcasts/how-to-deal-with-imposter-syndrome-with-clinical-psychologist-elzaan-marnane

Working in an agency certainly gives you experience that is hard to get anywhere else so keep pursuing that, but it's not the be all and end all.

An in-house position at the right company can be great too. Hone your portfolio and keep applying.

Most jobs (employee or contract) come through people you know personally (not a research-based fact, just anecdotal!) so keep growing your network.

    All the best!
  • Sorry to hear you're burning out and struggling. Couple things which hopefully will help position you to the right direction:

Getting a mentor as you mentioned will help. Talking to someone who has been through it and will help you figure out the right direction for you is invalueable. @Maria Agra Bermejo set up Guido (http://guido.tilda.ws/) recently which might be a good start to look.

There are programs like The Dek (https://www.deklondon.com/workshops) which are government, EU or university funded that are set up to help businesses get off the ground. If you're a freelance then you're a business so it's worth make as much use out of the free business programs that's offered in the UK.

I know it's hard as income is a huge worry but make sure you take time for yourself to rest, learn and focus on your direction. I hope that helps.
  • I am freelancing for two years now, after 7 years as a creative director, and I had to learn lot of things as a self employer. What you are experiencing is totally normal, it will get better. Just keep talking with other designers, ask for advice when you need it, and if you know any graphic design association, join it, it really helps.
  • look for side hustles:
    - create tutorials
    - -II- creative contents and sell it like retro supply
    etc.
    - educate yourself on linkedin & the future courses & become an influencer
