I'm a recent graduate trying to fill out my portfolio and I'm finding it hard to come up with self initiated projects - anyone have advice?

  • Try completing 36 days of type challange on instagram (design a letter a day) – it shows your creativity and can really improve your illustrator skills! You can see mine on instagram @louise.designed.this or look at @36daysoftype
  • Previous D&AD briefs are always useful, just read some and see if you want to change or adapt it to suit you.
  • Hi Rachael,

I mentor a group of graduates with the same issue and know some well working way to overcome on this. Drop me a message on 4nn414@gmail.com and I'm happy to chat through things!
  • Hi Rachael. Try contacting local community groups/initiatives & charities to see if you can help them with any design work?
  • There's brief generators online such as briefbox, sharpen and fake clients. They might help you come up with some ideas.
  • Hi Rachael - check out the D&AD New Blood briefs! They’re open to all and could be a great example of initiated work. https://www.dandad.org/en/d-ad-new-blood-awards/
