I'm looking to improve my video editing skills as a beginner, any suggestions?

  • In my opinion there are two sides to it; the technical know-how (how to use the software etc) and the art of the cut; when to cut and why, narrative flow, rythmn, emotional/story beats. Best way to learn is from doing. There are some good courses on Udemy and Youtube to learn the technical side. There's an amazing book by one of the greatest film editors, Walter Murch, called In the Blink of an Eye which goes into the psychology/emotion of cutting. Other than that, watch loads of films/TV and work on your own projects!
  • I taught myself by making videos that I wanted to make.
Following along YouTube lessons made me demotivated, so I recreated music videos and film trailers using stock footage and then taught myself editing tricks through YouTube lessons.

That way by the end I had made a video I was proud of and learnt something.

You can get free stock footage from sites like Pexels, or even YouTube if you don’t plan on publishing the video anywhere
  • depends what type of things you're trying to edit.
-For social media chop fast and snappy, subtitiles tomatch the pace of speech too.
-Commericals you can recreate spec adverts by using stock images and creating concepts.
-Films try and create short films from spare footage or voluntaeer to edit a few short films - you can then try and make a trailer from it too.
-Youtube is always the best source
  • Watching a lot of YouTube tutorials and trying to recreate videos that you like
