If being an experienced designer in print, you would start to learn webdesign from scratch right now, which tool would you start with?

All my career I have been working as a designer for marketing, branding and advertisement, but I can see that learning webdesign will expand my posibilities of being hired. The tool options is overwhelming right now, and I'm struggling to decide if to start with wordpress, Figma, sketch or any of the many posible tools. I have some experience in XD, but I'm not sure if is the best option. Thanks a lot for your time!

  • hi @Eden Allen , thanks a lot for your answer and for bringing some light to my desk :D. After doing some research I think I will start with Figma and move to coding once I master it, if I see the need... or find a good team mate for the coding part.
  • @Kath Oakley hi Kath, thanks a lot for the recomendation. Those courses looks fantastic and I'm definetly willing to invest in a good training, If I decide to give it a go I will let you know how does it go!
  • @Björn Svensson hi Björn, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one in this situation. I believe to make it run you would still need to team up with a programer, but someone more experience might have another experience.
  • @Adrian Van Cooten Thanks a lot, Adrian! I'm actually deciding thowards that direction, I will definetly have in mind your offer! if you have any recomendation of tutorials would be really helpful :)
  • @Eden Allen I've been thinking about the same as David here, and did give Wordpress a go but I never managed to get along with it. So I'm considering Figma or XD or similar, but what is the best option really in terms of getting work? I mean, where would I be able to use my future skills in designing/prototyping if I still can't get a site or app up and running? Is there a demand for skills like these i general or do I need to learn a whole bunch more (theory of UX/UI etc) to have a chance at all to make som money off it?
  • Hi David, if you do want to code I've heard that the SuperHi courses are really accessible. I've not tried them myself but have been recommended them and heard good things about them: https://www.superhi.com/
  • Hi David, I have used all the tools you have mentioned here, I would say Figma is a great tool to learn, it is very similar to Sketch and XD but with better prototyping abilities and it's free! WordPress relies a lot more on your ability to code, which is always a great skill to have in web design but not always a necessity, it is also a CMS rather than a tool just to design, Figma and Sketch are design tools. So with Figma, you can design the site and with WordPress, you can actually create it. Hope that makes sense! There are tons of tutorials out there, good luck!
