If you could choose only one? What would play essential role in how audience will perceive the film? Is it soundtrack or sound design?

  • Good question Kipras! If I only had to choose one, I think I would go for the soundtrack as it can affect how the audience 'perceives' the film as you say.

However I am an editor and am currently editing a new short, which I also directed. As a result, I am able to do some basic sound design on the film and in theory could make it 'acceptable' for an audience to listen to. Plus the composer I'm working with has made music that helps to set up the tone and style for what's to come. So I am slightly biased!

If I didn't have that skill then, as Vince mentioned below, bad sound is very challenging to listen to so even basic sound design is more essential than music. It can make a scene or an entire world come to life and make it feel 'real', which isn't possible with just music.

    What do you think?
  • I would argue sound design creates a more immersive experience for the audience regardless if there is an official soundtrack or not. Without sound design we cant create a believeable or immersive world for our storytelling.
  • @Vince Camacho Good point Vince. It does not matter how good footage and all the story is if audio is terrible. It outweights all the project. However, can brilliant Sound design safe the bad film?
  • Good question! Sound design IMO. Cant watch a film with bad sound. Soundtrack def matters just as much but I can still get into a film regardless of soundtrack.
