Is it best to design your CV/Resume for graphic design jobs or to keep it simple?

  • Keep it simple! Design and format it well, keep it easy to read and digest. Whoever is going to be looking at it will be sifting through quite a few. What you want is it to be easily understood with clear direction to your portfolio - which they are going to be far more interested by, so keep the exciting visual work for that!
  • Hi Ella,
    - Design it — in a simple way. Ideally so the style fits the porftolio you are sending through as well.
    - Make it easy for the reader to get information fast: great hierarchies, working hyperlinks, ideally landscape format (much easier to check out digitally).
    - The way you layout your CV is a first indication of how you work as a graphic designer.
  • Keep it simple.

Remember, whoever is handling these, be it HR or creative directors, will be looking at hundreds of CVs. You might think creating a visually distinctive CV might set you apart, but what's really important is that all the information is readable and easy to find - even after reading 50 CVs.

When I was handling this kind of thing, the last thing I wanted was someone overdesigning their CV and obscuring the information I needed to find quickly behind, often clumsy, design.
