Looking for advice on how to get into art direction!

I have over 3 years working in communications and marketing, often assisting or leading on the creative for multiple organisations.

If anyone has any opportunities for me to get involved in any art direction that would be welcome (open to voluntary whilst I build my portfolio!)

All and any advice welcome!

  • Hey Charlotte, you probably already know this but sometimes the best way to get into a new direction and learn it is to create your own projects.

Start small, write up a project brief, research your artists (or whoever you might want to collab with), know exactly what is you want to achieve and then just reach out.

I've found in the past that I can usually approach other artists by being up front and saying 'hey I think I have a fun idea, I have no money for it and I won't make any money from it either but would you be interested in collaborating?'.

The best way is to get hands-on and figure it out, trust your experience to visualise and give direct feedback. Hope that helps!
  • My advice, go nowhere near Linkedin! Its really not for the creatives anymore, large organisation, corporates and snake oil sellers who really don't have you or me at the heart of it. I've now decided NOT to send my resume as a creative designer if the company strips the information out. This should be a warning sign to any creative that your design is not important to them! You are another number ...
  • Hey Charlotte, some advice in here might help (it's aimed at copywriters but there's lots to take away for any creative role): https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/work-get-vikki-ross/?trackingId=9a1nveGkS3uJepdNWA0Lwg%3D%3D
  • I guess that you should start doing your personal work, and then built from there, it takes time, but I guess that it worked for me.
  • My advice would be UAL.
They have really great programs that would help you in a professional way.
Education is key + all the connections you get. Its worth it and will give you a strong plattform alongside your work experience.
