Looking for some feedback with regards to the content and design of my website, and the direction I should take it in going forward.

Hi!

I'm looking for some feedback on the content of my website. Up until now it's acted as a virtual portfolio, a collection of articles and photo galleries that's updated semi-frequently. It would really help motivate me to produce more work for it if I knew which parts (in particular which articles) people responded to the most, so that I can steer it in the right direction.

Additionally, if anyone has any recommendations with regards to the design of the website as a whole, it would be fantastic to hear from you, as it was my first attempt at using a website builder and it's farily minimalist as a result.

All feedback is appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone who has some time to spare! Hope you're all keeping safe and well!

  • Hi! Regarding the website itself, I would say that maybe don't put images on the header, as it makes it more clean and professional, and also on the bottom of the page I would say display the information horizontally instead of vertically. The rest of the menu is clear and user friendly. I like that you do use images to illustrate the articles so people can have a sense of what is about.
  • Hi Alex, hope you are keeping well sir!

You are keeping the creative juices flowing, good job and here are my bits and pieces.

Which of these creations/sections fires you? From this, then maybe your direction will manifest?

Check this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6NsEDwHHiE. This put things into perspective for me *whistling*

More visibility on the site menu at the bottom, a bigger font and spread?
Do you have any social media handles to connect to?
Considering all previous great suggestions, have a look at the web template. Maybe a new one or redesign?

The writing sir, ace! This - https://www.shamblesramble.com/post/reasons-why-you-shouldnt-date-co-workers :D

My 2 pence and keep up the good work.
  • @Alexander Adams In terms of ones that aren't as serious in terms of tone, I immediately went to 'Reasons why you shouldn't date co-workers' and 'An open letter to Salaf' - but looking again, even the ones that deal with more serious messages, such as 'Christians at the door' manages to take a somewhat serious subject matter, without preaching or being uninteresting. There's a lot of personality there, even if it isn't laugh-out-loud funny.
  • @Loïc Bauméa Thanks for letting me know! To be honest I've been a little neglectful of the mobile version of the site, so I'll definitely take a look at it to see what the problem was, and if there are any others. Cheers!
  • @Rachel Sawyer @Prachi Deshingkar Hi guys, thanks for the advice! I can definitely see what you mean, now that I'm looking back at it. Too much of the same font in a similar size was not the best idea. Ironically I was thinking about a maximum of 3 fonts already, but I clearly didn't implement that very well. I'll go back over it and find some nice combinations and redesign a bit. Thanks again!
  • @Larise Cummings Hey, thanks for taking a look! Some of them are essays, yes. It's kind of a unfocused mess because it's really just down to what I feel like writing about at any particular time, but I'm glad you liked the opinion pieces! Some are more serious than others however, did you have any specific article in mind?
  • Hello, I had a look at the website and I really like it. The content is precise and well put. Being a designer, I agree with what Rachel suggested. As she says, maybe you can try different font combinations to make it more visually appealing. So that there is a hierarchy in text and content. You create a flow to the website and the user pays attention to one, then the other and then the rest.
Always ask this question, "What is the first thing I want the user to see?"

Other than that, I appreciate your work. Hope it helps, All the best!
  • Hi, I had a look on mobile and it's responsive, except on the gallery page, I couldn't scroll down to the bottom, it stops at seoul for some reason?

Otherwise it does the job :)
  • Hi Alexander,

    You've got some greate content!

I would suggest considering some font combinations. Give it a google, and you will find some lovely font pairings that will add interest to the text. As a rule of thumb, use a maximum of three different fonts.

I personally wouldn't use the underline for the header/title. Have a look at font hierachy for some inspiration on font size and line weight so you can highlight the important text in an aesthetic way.

I hope this helps a little! All the best!
  • Hi! I'm not a designer so can only really talk about the content (though I really like the minimalist design, everything is easy to find and it's easy to navigate around.
In terms of the content itself, from what I've seen at a quick glance, it looks really interesting. A lot of the posts read like essays, which I guess is the intention?
In terms of personal preference, the 'Opinion' section is my favourite, and those are the posts I'd most likely read because they're hilarious. If I were you, I'd focus on that.
And this probably didn't help at all, but those are some initial thoughts!
