Looking for some solid feedback on my portfolio

Been told I could have more experience in branding. What stage do you think I should be at, junior, mid?

Not trying to give up. So determined to get a good role someplace.

Hire me?

  • Hi Abisola.
Nice work. And I personally love the experimental type design. (A quick tip: you could add the job title onto the first page so future employers instantly see what your focus is.)

I would go for that mid-weight position. It’s what you’ve last done based on your resume. If you wouldn’t be that level and have the relevant skills, the company wouldn’t have hired you.

In regards to branding experience: it’s always great to have some branding in your portfolio. But in case branding is also not the area you want to work in most, don’t put too much of a focus on it. Your portfolio should show a great array of work, but ideally you focus on the things you love most and want to focus on in your next role.

Hope this helps a bit and good luck finding your next role.

  • @Abisola Oshikoya I think that you should go with whatever colour you think works best but I would go for either a white to make it pop but what would probably be nicer is if you could get another colour palette that works in complementing and pairing with your work :)
  • Hey Abisola,

Liking the experimental approach of the typography and think it gives some life to the portfolio, so I see what you're going for there, however, I think the headers 'GRAPHIC DESIGN' etc are a little too heavily manipulated, I would think about what there place is there. Is it as a compositional element? If so, then I would manipulate further into the title pages, if not, then make it more legible. I think at the moment it's at an uncomfortable balance between the two so unclear as to what it's purpose is.

Love the artworking you've done for Big Love, really great use of type and colour, it's giving me the same vibes of Kris Andrew Small if you know him? If not, here he is, I'm sure you'll find a great source of inspiration in him: https://krisandrewsmall.com.

You seem to have a really good understanding of colour palettes, utilise this more in your portfolio! The background of grey and navy blue juxtaposing with the colourful work you create is not letting your work fully sing in my opinion.

Also, are you using a grid for the layout? If not then definitely formulate it into one, little details like this are things that employers will notice.

    Hope this helps!
    Nath :)
  • @Abisola Oshikoya No worries, don't think it has to be a lot, maybe 4-5 sentences, just showing why you made certain decisions and your thought process or research too. Basically anything that adds 'value' to your portfolio to show the client you know what you're doing.
  • Hi Abisola, firstly i think your work looks great. To answer your question I think you are verging on a Mid designer. I think maybe that you could include a bit of explanation about the brief for each project and some reasoning to your design decisions too. Also you could possibly cut down the size of your portfolio, I think the length I have been told is a max of 15 pages. I've also been told to exclude your CV and just have that as a separate document. This is just advice i've been told so it's really up to you. Hope that helps a bit and good luck
