  • Love the site and the illustrations being used. I understand the lack of budget but I think if you're asking for brand new illustrations it should always be paid, even if it's not a lot. Licensing imagery that's already been completed may be better instead of asking for free, new content. Especially for the quality I can see on the website. At the end of the day, it is still undermining the industry to ask for free new stuff, no matter what your intentions are. Even if you have to use less illustrations, to me it's better to have less and pay the artist somewhat, than a lot and none at all. I feel the same way for any creative job, including journalism and writing, so I do heavily sympathise with your struggles concerning that. I hope the site can be profitable one day so it's easier and fairer on everyone
  • @Freddie Rowland Hi Freddie, thanks for sharing this with me, it's a really interesting and relevant read. I agree that there is a huge problem in the industry re: not paying creatives for their work. As a freelance music journalist, so much of the work I do is unpaid and it's extremely frustrating. I don't think brands or media companies should ask anyone to work for free, but Hook is a passion project which I run in my spare time, out of my own pocket, with no advertisers or sponsors. If, and when the site is profitable in any way this will go towards paying contributors. In the meantime, it is a space for music discovery and for people who want to build their portfolios to do so. I do struggle with asking people to work for free, which is why I always make it explicit (as above). At the end of the day people can choose to work with us or not. I hope you understand. Also, I've checked out your page—your work is great.
  • No way, I'm a music loving illustrator! I'd love to take part in this even if it's unpaid, will email portfolio asap x
