Packaging Design Question
Hi Everyone,
I received the printers die cut template for a package however I'm struggling to understand how I go about placing the artwork onto the template along with a 10mm bleed.
Could someone possibly give me a bit of a walkthrough?
Do I just create the artwork in the shape of the die cut template and offet the path by 10mm (using Illustrator) and send that to the printers? Or is there a bit more technicality behind it?
The package itself is simple, all one colour with a logo and image on the top and sides
I've added an image of the die cut template which I have in an eps file which is auto flipped to be print view. If anyone could help out that would be much appreciated! It's my first packaging project so don't want to mess this up!
If you need anymore info, let me know :)
Thanks a lot!

- @christopher conway Thanks for the advice Chris! I'll double check the glue area!
- You can do as you said and offset the trim cutter by 10mm, or just set a retangle overall so all sides have at least 10mm around. I would be cautious of the 'glue' area, the printer may not want any ink on that area. Check with them. Chris
- @Luke Freeman Hey Luke, thanks for the detailed response! I think the sample print is definitely something I'll do, best to check it all before sending it off! Thanks again!
- Simple standard template seems you have the options to design the artwork to middle section add up the canvas width of 1572 mm x height 288 or 290 mm set that up in what ever design software your using.Or get the middle sections and create a merged shape and use that as canvas guide.Make a new layer put the template on a layer on top and lock it.Bottom (new layer) When it comes placing the artwork do a link file into your illustrator template supplied make a clipping mask 1572 mm x height 288 mm.You also have the freedom to add or extend artwork to the top and bottom (BASE). Width 484 mm x Height 152 mm.Consider your going to have 6R on the corners means going to be rounded off during the process through folding. Not sure what your artwork is going to look like, I’d suggest putting the type on there first sort out a layout maybe doing a cheap print draft off a roller and putting it together. As normal paper sizes are too small to support that.It may delay time you can ask the printers to send tear sheets. For you have a look at the print.
- @Oliver Tuzzio you are welcome, I hope it goes well :)
- @Sarah Bloomfield Great stuff, thanks for your help! I think I'm getting there!
- @Oliver Tuzzio it could mean that, but it might be worth checking with the printers to make sure. If it is the inner side, you should just be able to use the reflect tool in Illustrator to flip the cutter which will then give you the template for the outer side.
- @Sarah Bloomfield Hi Sarah, Thanks for your quick reply and advice! I do have another question I just thought of, as the template I've been given states that 'This drawing is for inside view'. Do I need another template for the outside? If not how would I go about providing both inside and outside print designs?
- Hi Oliver,By what you’ve described, it sounds like you’re going along the right lines. It should be fine if you offset the cutter path by 10mm to create the bleed. If you would like further advice, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I’ve been designing packaging graphics for several years now :)
