Photographers - If you use it, can anyone help me understand the AOP usage calculator?

Trying to get my head around it.

If Base Usage Rate isn't day rate, how do you calculate it?

I have some questions about territorial licences etc

Thanks

Rash

  • So let’s see, BUT at the calculator will be your date rate e.g. 1200 , this stays the same no matter if its a day’s work or a week long job. Then you add the kind of usage required ( local/worldwide etc etc ) and end up with a figure. Bear in mind that this usage calculator model is used for reference, there will be negotiations between the two parties ( you and the client ) till you reach a price that both sides are happy with. I know what you re thinking “No way I can charge this huge amount of money for usage-no one will ever pay that” . well, truth is only “big” companies will be able/willing to pay for licensing. If they go through the traditional commercial way (advertisement agencies etc ) then they know they gonna pay usage fees. That’s one easy way to know when to add usage fees on your estimate or not.
  • One recent suggestion from another photographer I know is to make your BUR rate 5-10% of your typical day rate, which might give a more realistic estimate when working out usage.
  • Hey, if you are an AOP member try the forum/mailing lists for help? The idea is that it helps with membership incentive/value and protects their intellectual property. They are very responsible and will be happy to help.

AOP admin as a first contact if you’re stuck are also great. All the best.
