What to prioritise when finding a Copywriter role?

Is it better to prioritise working on different types of copy in one industry or across different sectors/industries but limited types of copy? I'm applying for permanent roles and have come across this scenario.

I'm trying to get experience that will allow me flexibility in future copywriter roles.

Thanks!

  • I can't give you a black and white answer here. How annoying! I can share my thoughts though...

    1. Don't set limits
Perhaps to start, don't set limits and be open to everything. You never know where you might end up. I never dreamed of working at The Body Shop. And I loved it so much, I never thought I'd leave - and if I did, I never thought I'd leave the beauty industry. After eight years, I wanted to do something completely different and was open to what might be next, which led me into entertainment via Virgin Media and then Sky.

    2. Set limits
If there's something you're really interested in, and only want to work on/be known for, set limits to focus on one area and grow within it. I found my preferred area at Sky 10 years ago and have stayed in entertainment ever since. It makes it easy for people to find me and know how I can help them - for example, right now, I'm working with another entertainment brand because they knew I'd be right for their TV project.
  • I think it depends where you are in your career. If you're not sure what you prefer or are strongest at, choose something where you get to do lots of different types of copy. If you know, use your specialism and hone it further. In my opinion, industries are irrelevant (if you can write about cars you can write about shoes, sweets and finance too). I think it's only relevant for specialist fields, such as medical and legal...
  • Great question. Working on different types of copy in one industry may be easier to do and more beneficial in the long run when it comes to consistency of the experience and niching down. However I don't think that would limit your flexibility cos I do see CWs working across industries who probably built thier skills in one initially.

    Good luck with your search!
