What was the best advice you were ever given as na artist?

Share the best pieces of advice you were given! Mine would probably be ‘no matter how hard you work you might end up not liking the final outcome and that’s okay because it means that you always strive to be better than you were yesterday’

  • “To be creative means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it.”

This quotes explain very well my idea. So I think that the best way to do a project is to put yourself in it, opening your mind to the world, discovering new cultures, new people, ect.

  • Two pieces:

The first from David Pearson in regards to being a freelancer: never spend more than 18 days by yourself.

It sounds arbitrary, but I can attest that 18 days really does seem to be the limit before you start to go slightly mad, start buying 1kg bags of M&Ms, and get REALLY depressed.

The second, I don't remember where from: never pay attention to criticism from someone to whom you wouldn't go for advice - it really helps block out the petty comments you get from idiots and folks who want to pretend they know what they're doing.
  • Learning that there's space for everyone and every level in this industry, it's a hard thing to believe when you compare and look at someone else's work, but having that confidence to believe in you is game changing. "No one is you and that's your power"
  • I think mine was 'take yourself seriously as an artist'. At the time I was very reluctant to call myself an artist or illustrator, but hearing that made me push myself to work harder and live up to that title!
