Wondering how many designers on here are in house in a non-design business?

I've worked as the only designer in non-design based businesses for my career so far, currently in a PA/PR/Comms agency. Would love to meet others in similar positions or with similar backgrounds!

It's an odd world, and feels a million miles from the things you read in the design press, with a whole load of idiosyncrasies caused by the environment. So if there are others out there, we shoudl support each other, or if there are existing networks I'd love to know!

Bit of a shout into the void.

  • @Phillip Powdrill Ah thanks. Yeah, I started in a civil engineering firm and had to learn how to be a designer by myself in that environment. PA/PR is a bit different in that I have a lot of clients in different industries, but still all by myself.
  • @Ali Can Elagöz Thanks. I'm working as a designer for a wide range of clients, it's more that I've effectively always been the only designer wherever I've worked so would really value the connection with others!
  • Absolutely you're not the only one. I worked with 4 different PR/Comms agencies. @Dan Green

In time, it's getting more difficult to turn-back to design or advertising business. So, stay to keep-up with the design side. Try to participate exhibitions as artist, get some freelance design works etc.
  • @Dan Green you're not the only one! I've had a few roles in-house in larger manufacturing businesses, usually as part of the marketing team, most recently in a full in-house agency. I don't know of any existing networks for these kind of roles but perhaps something that needs setting up :)
