Organised by Design Council

Scaling design across the public sector with a focus on climate change.

About this event
This session is part of the Design in the Public Sector Final Showcase, a series of three conversations to celebrate the work and achievements of 13 Local Authorities that have been taking innovative approaches to address local climate change challenges.

In this session, Design Council Expert Andrew Cameron will facilitate a conversation with three councils that participated in this year’s Design in the Public Sector programme to share their journey and learning from this experience. Teams will discuss their insights about engaging with residents in a range of projects from actioning the recommendations from a Climate Change Citizen Jury (Kendal Town Council and South Lakeland District Council), to engaging with communities to get them involved in understanding the biodiversity in their local areas (Babergh and Mid-Suffolk), and promoting active travel as part of a green recovery strategy (St. Helen Council).

We hope you will be inspired by some of the innovative approaches and interventions developed by these teams on the programme. You’ll leave the event with practical insights and knowledge that can inform and enhance your work in similar areas.

The Design in the Public Sector programme, delivered in partnership with the Local Government Association, supports public sector leaders to explore key challenges affecting their local communities and identify innovative opportunities to deliver positive and sustainable change.

This event is open to professionals working across the public sector and other organisations interested to learn from and connect with other local authorities working to achieve Net Zero.

Speakers include:

Andrew Cameron, Design Council

Andrew is an engineer with a background in transport, architectural engineering and urban design. He is passionate about how we can plan for low-carbon movement whilst at the same time creating great streets and enjoyable places.

Helen Moriarty, Project Manager Kendal Town Council and Jemma Fells, Locality Project Officer South Lakeland District Council

Kendal hosted the UK’s first town level Citizens Jury to help Kendal decide what it should do about Climate Change. 20 citizens created 27 recommendations based on expert presentations. Via Design Council training, Kendal Town Council and SLDC have defined, developed and are ready to deliver projects that meet the recommendations of the Citizens Jury.

Sam Lake, Corporate Manager for Customer Operations and Will Burchnall, Corporate Manager for Public Realm, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils

Our project is about enabling our tenants to engage in and own biodiversity improvements across our housing stock. This is with the aim of increasing and improving residents’ wellbeing, and the impact on the environment in our district, alongside other measures (such as reduced/different mowing, tree planting and wildflower meadows).
