The Role
We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Curator, Sculpture (Maternity Cover, fixed term for 12 months). The post-holder will form part of the team responsible for the care, research, display, and interpretation of the collections of the Decorative Art and Sculpture Department. The V&A’s Sculpture Collection is the most comprehensive holding of post-classical European sculpture in the world. The collection contains outstanding and numerous examples of medieval ivories and English medieval alabasters, and celebrated collections of Italian Renaissance and Baroque sculpture. It also has substantial and renowned holdings of bronzes, medals and terracotta sculptures; and the plaster casts – displayed in the great Victorian Cast Courts – are amongst the most popular exhibits in the museum. Also held within the wider department are the extensive world-class collections of metalwork, jewellery, ceramics and glass. The tasks undertaken by Assistant Curators are broad and varied, and these provide the opportunity to develop a range of curatorial skills at the V&A working with colleagues across museum activities. Assistant Curators spend a significant portion of their time working on object-related activity that pertains to the care and display of collections, maintaining documentation and developing interpretation to allow for their presentation to wide audiences. The Assistant Curator of Sculpture plays an important role in supporting operations in the Sculpture galleries, particularly related to the V&A’s award-winning Medieval and Renaissance Galleries. The successful candidate will have an interest in sculpture and excellent organisational, interpersonal and writing skills. In addition, they will be comfortable working across collections, and cultivating and cementing good relations with colleagues at the V&A as well as with external organisations and communities. We would like the successful candidate to join us in November or early December of this year.
