Role purpose and overview
A senior position within the Features and Lifestyle print teams, focusing on the Lifestyle weekend sections and deputising for the Print editor on daily Features section as required. Using top-flight editing skills and creative talent, you will create pages for the Telegraph’s world-class Features and Lifestyle sections. You will feel comfortable traversing a diverse mix of subjects, working with the Print editor and senior commissioners to shape the sections, editing copy and creating visually stunning pages. You will be guided by our content’s online performance to build the pages with an awareness of digital publishing across the newsroom.
Key responsibilities
  • Deputise for the Feature and Lifestyle Print Editor as required across both the daily Features and Lifestyle print sections, taking on a senior leadership role across both print teams
  • Lead the Lifestyle print team, ensuring both the Saturday and Sunday sections are published to the highest quality.
  • Edit copy as required for the page, optimising style and quality as well as making necessary revisions.
  • Work with the Chief sub-editor to ensure copyflow for sections operates as efficiently as possible.
  • Conceptualise design ideas with senior page designers and art directors and ensure commissions are coordinated with digital visuals.
  • In collaboration with the Head of Lifestyle and Print editor, craft the print run for both sections to produce a balanced and highly engaging story selection.
  • Use the digital performance of articles to guide story selection and headline choice.
  • Write brilliant, sharp and fresh headlines and furniture to make the pages gleam.
  • A razor sharp eye for legally sensitive content to quickly refer for guidance.
  • Liaise with writers and other editors to ensure copy is accurate and legally sound.
  • Ensure all sections are off stone on time.
Essential vs desirable skills required for the role
  • Experience of newspaper section editing and leading a team.
  • Significant time spent in regional, trade or national level media organisations.
  • Copy-editing, proofing, subbing and production to a high standard.
  • Quick, accurate writing of headlines
  • Publishing skills, including knowledge of design and print layouts and a brilliant eye for photography as well as creative flair for inventive page furniture
  • Ability to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Strong news sense and judgement.
