Role purpose and overview
The Picture Editor is responsible for overseeing the delivery of a first-class picture package across multiple platforms for all Telegraph Media Group titles. This includes serving our award-winning app with fresh pictures for notifications, carousels and picture-rich articles, ensuring our social media accounts have the best displays and delivering the pick of the crop to our newspapers each day.
Key responsibilities
  • Managing a team of picture editors, researchers and support staff to ensure the most impactful images are published.  This will include defining responsibilities and resetting roles when needed.
  • Overseeing distribution of picture desk resources on the team rota to ensure all major events are fully staffed.
  • Managing a multi-million-pound annual budget including evaluating ongoing subscription deals and individual image licensing with third party partners.
  • Reacting to breaking stories and identifying the best images for immediate publication on telegraph.co.uk and taking a proactive approach to ensure all pictures are promoted on site, in print articles and on social channels.
  • Conceiving of the best opportunities for securing exclusive news photography and liaising with a team of contracted photographers to ensure optimum delivery.
  • Building slideshows of the best images to pitch to executive editors at news conference and curating a tight edit of the day’s best photographic content.
  • Liaising with news and digital editors to ensure fast and accurate publishing plans.
  • Commissioning exclusive picture sets that can be published in picture gallery format, encouraging new subscriptions and engagement for current registered and subscribed readers.
  • Identifying pictures that can be used in our exceptional wide-format articles and working with visual editors to source the right pictures.
  • Using your proven managerial skills to ensure the picture tasting and picture research operations run at an optimum level.
  • Confidence, tenacity and resilience is needed to successfully pitch pictures to the senior editorial team at conference, you will also be able to explore opportunities that arise from resulting conversations.
Key skills
  • Significant experience in a deputy or senior picture editor role
  • Proven experience of managing a seven-figure budget
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Telegraph’s photography style and content
  • A full understanding of licensing, copyright, legal and IPSO obligations
  • A practical approach to problem solving including the ability to manage several projects running concurrently
  • Experience of change management would be advantageous
