About the role
As a Principal Product Designer in the Waitrose Product Design team, you are an expert design practitioner and will be responsible for identifying, leading, conceptualising and executing the design vision and strategy for end-to-end customer journeys and propositions, across multiple product domains. To deliver best in class and innovative user experiences across web, mobile and in-store digital touchpoints.
You thrive on solving large complex design challenges cross functionally, in close collaboration with product teams, and the business, in line with business strategy and OKRs.
Key responsibilities
  • Deep domain expert and hands on design individual contributor/expert practitioner and strategic leader in Product Design
  • Identifies, drives, executes and delivers strategic ‘big picture’ product design work to achieve excellent result for large complex challenges across product  domains and/or missions
  • Applies their deep domain design skillset to set and meet the highest standards and practice in their work. While also elevating the working practices and pioneers new design standards
  • Sharing their knowledge and proactively influencing others to deliver to these standards
  • Sets their priorities and manages their workload across their areas of focus
  • Autonomously solves large complex problem cross domain and cross functional initiative, working in close collaboration across product and business teams
What will you be doing?
  • You will apply your deep domain knowledge and skills to set and meet the highest design standards and practice.. Help to elevate product design working practices and pioneering new design standards.
  • You will build a deep understanding of the customer and market through research, use of insights and analysis of data ensuring that your team creates solutions which meet ever changing customer needs
  • Mentoring and inspiring other designers in the team to elevate their design practice
  • Actively drive design quality, consistency and great ways of working between teams for the areas you work on, through regular feedback and leading by example
  • Collaborate regularly using strong communication, storytelling documentation and facilitation skills
  • Execute (and advocate for) best in class, intuitive and accessible user experience. While being pragmatic and balancing the ideal customer experience with knowing where and when to make scoping trade-offs based on technical constraints, experimentation strategy or business risk
  • You'll regularly work alongside the product and experience design leadership team to help make sure long-term strategy, business goals and experience quality are all in alignment and that there are healthy opportunities for visibility and feedback
Essential skills you’ll need
  • Experience leading and executing design direction across multiple product teams in matrixed organisations, including mentoring and coaching others
  • Deep understanding of designing products for responsive, native and other digital touch points
  • Portfolio that showcases work from initial strategic discovery through to delivery, creating vision and strategic roadmaps to inform, influence and guide teams and senior stakeholders
  • Solid experience of sketching, wireframing, prototyping and user flows
  • Information architecture experience including the development of website taxonomies, categorisation and site maps
  • Strong understanding of digital service design, design thinking and human-centred design frameworks and techniques
Desirable skills
  • Retail ecommerce experience within a large organisation
  • Previous experience of designing for animation/motion and store-based digital products
  • Experience design and conducting research
