Within Digital, the COO (Chief Operating Officer) team plays a critical role in driving the Digital transformation: we set and implement the overall BT Digital strategy and plans and we are the engine room driving the outcomes required for our customers.
The Digital Strategy team defines and runs the strategy for a £1.1Bn Digital organisation. The role will align c£500-600m annual CapEx and c£400m OpEx investment to the Digital strategy and set the strategic enablers for £1Bn+ value from Data & AI. The role will need to influence and align BT’s strategy, CFU strategies and the Digital Strategy and manage internal and external stakeholders at Board level.
What you’ll be doing
Strategic Responsibilities
  • Translate the Digital Strategy into a multi-year Digital roadmap (fully interlocked with BT’s £3bn transformation plan), identifying clear ‘moments of truth’ and critical decision-points across product, platform, supplier, workforce roadmaps, and key outcomes for 3-5years.
  • Digital roadmap will include: definition of prioritised strategic initiatives with clear owners (including transformation).  The strategic initiatives will be mapped to OKRs / KPIs and key high level delivery outcomes, underpinned by key decisions required to deliver.  Incl product, platform, supplier, workforce roadmaps
  • Define and lock-in challenging multi-year outcome-based targets (OKRs / KPIs) that will enable the strategy, including targets for workforce sizing, productivity, supplier costs, efficiency, transformation, strategy investment choices, tech development, AI/Gen AI and growth
  • Definition of the Digital and CDIO Goals (aligned with Digital OKRs/KPIS)
  • Use strategic priorities to provide recommendations on investment weightings to ensure alignment to strategy: Provide input to Finance team with recommendations on investment weighting to support any strategic shifts required
  • Investment Case Approval (as part of the Digital Investment board): Evaluate and approve Digital investment cases, ensuring they align with the strategy
  • Strategic assessment of MTP (Medium term plan): Review of MTP to check that the plan will execute on the strategy: outcomes may include recommendations for additional initiatives / programmes  or changes to targets, or updates to strategy
  • In-year review: Review performance and delivery (inputs from Delivery transformation teams) and review whether any changes to programmes (scope, targets, outcomes) required based on strategy, or may require change to strategy
  • Grow strong relationships and drive collaboration with multiple stakeholders through a demonstration of industry knowledge, strategic thinking, and the application of this to solve challenges.
Leadership
  • Act as a positive role model, leading by example, promoting a one team behaviour, as aligned to the Digital Way
  • Influence/ support and make decisions that benefit the broader organization and align with strategic goals.
  • Proactively share knowledge with the organization, working to increase digital understanding and strategy across the business.
  • Apply strong commercial and customer focus and external perspective to project decision-making.
  • Encourage experimentation and identify growth opportunities for both the team and the organization.
Key Decisions:
  • Definition of key strategic priorities, evaluation and prioritization based on alignment with the Digital Strategy, potential impact on strategic objectives, ensuring focused efforts on initiatives that deliver the highest value to the organization.
  • Definition of outcome-based targets that will underpin and deliver the Digital strategy
  • Recommendation on Digital’s £500-600m annual investment and budget allocation
  • Sign off on Digital investment cases, ensuring alignment with strategy
You'll have the following skills and experience
  • Long-Term Planning: Expertise in creating and maintaining strategic roadmaps that outline key initiatives and milestones aligned with organizational goals.
  • Performance Metrics: Ability to define and implement effective OKRs and KPIs that accurately measure progress and drive performance toward strategic objectives.
  • Investment Strategy: Strong commercial acumen to align strategic investments with business objectives, ensuring optimal allocation of resources.
  • Business Case Evaluation: Proficiency in analyzing investment opportunities, assessing risks and returns, and making data-driven recommendations for strategic investments.
  • Relationship Building: Proven ability to build, influence, and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including at the Board level.
  • Critical Thinking: Strong critical thinking and analytical skills to develop effective, data-driven solutions for complex problems.
