We hosted our debut Ogilvy Roots event back in November 2017 by opening our doors at Sea Containers to a talented collective of artists, poets, directors and panellists for an evening of creativity and debate. Sponsored by H&O, Hippeas and Art Finder, the sold-out event was designed to inspire open conversation and a fresh creative outlook for our attendees. The evening kicked off with a juicy panel discussion on the topic: Has political correctness gone too far and is it hindering creativity? Led by Ogilvy EMEA EVP Global Brand Marketing, Nadja Bellan-White, the panel featured an eclectic mix of speakers including Model & Social Activist Monroe Burgdorf, Media Diversified CEO Henna Zarmurd-Butt, ADTV’s Amaru Wilcox alongside our own Ogilvy UK Managing Partner Jai Kotecha and Ogilvy PR London’s Head of Creative Chris Wall. A heated discussion and captive audience created a buzzing atmosphere.

This is what the evening was truly about – finding ways to push the boundaries of creativity. Whether that is through being bold enough to question the status quo or ensuring we have a seat at the table when it comes to creating new work, this discussion was about making a positive difference.

From film and photography, to fine art and tapestry, the main exhibition offered a unique curation of work from some incredible artists, spanning themes on British African and Asian culture, transgenderism, womanhood, single parenting, race and sexuality. Guests could also relax on beanbags in the intimate screening room to watch a selection of short films.
As the drinks flowed, the main exhibition room buzzed with discussion and music, but the performances of Kieron Rennie, The Oyoko and Jolade Olusanya drew silence. Their poetry, exploring themes of belonging, heritage, masculinity and home, punctuated the evening with gripping storytelling.
The energy on the night and the feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive. We want to thank all those who attended and took part in what we hope was the first of many exciting Roots events to come. A special thank you to all of the artists who featured their work on the night, the panellists who took part in the debate, and our sponsors for supporting the event. The exhibition could not have been a success without you.
