The British Museum of Food returns with its first major exhibition, just right for the summer.

Welcome to SCOOP: A Wonderful Ice Cream World, a celebratory show that will explore the past, present and future of ice cream.

No ordinary museum exhibit, SCOOP brings your favourite dessert to life in a total sensory immersion: expect ice cream weather, eat glow-in-the-dark ice cream, understand the neuroscience of the frozen treat and explore the dark side of desserts.

SCOOP's premiere this summer coincides with the 300th anniversary of Mary Eales’ Receipts (1718), the first printed volume to feature ice cream in an English publication. Eales claims to have sold confectionary at the court of Queen Anne. This year also marks the 399th anniversary of the first ice house built in Britain (to make ice cream) in Greenwich Park by order of James 1.
The exhibition is centred on the world’s largest collection of ice cream paraphernalia, featuring vintage equipment, service-ware, advertising, art and music drawn from 14,000 items collected over 40 years by Robin and Caroline Weir, authors of the award-winning book "Ice Creams Sorbets and Gelati The Definitive Guide" from Grub Street Publishers.


A special feature will focus on the life and ingenuity of Agnes B. Marshall, known in Victorian times as the Queen of Ices. Far ahead of her time, Marshall wrote several successful cook books, patented an ice cream machine and even suggested using liquid nitrogen to make ice cream as early as the late 1800s. Guests to SCOOP will step back in time to try some of Agnes's favourite recipes.
