  • Jean Genie: The Denim Evolution
Jean Genie: The Denim EvolutionJean Genie: The Denim Evolution By Katya Foreman 1 April 2015At once esoteric – with a sacred status among so-called “denim heads” – and a mainstream wardrobe staple, the humble jean remains one of the most deceptively complex and mysterious garments of all time; one that creates an emotional connection with the wearer. “It’s a very personal thing because of the uniqueness of the dyeing… as you start to wear in your jeans they kind of take on their own personality; each wear pattern is unique to the individual. It’s something that you wear over time and that moulds to your body and takes on character,” says Kara Nicholas, from historic denim manufacturer Cone Denim... • No food is healthy. Not even kale
No food is healthy. Not even kaleNo food is healthy. Not even kale. By Michael Ruhlman Not long ago, I watched a woman set a carton of Land O’ Lakes Fat-Free Half-and-Half on the conveyor belt at a supermarket. “Can I ask you why you’re buying fat-free half-and-half?” I said. Half-and-half is defined by its fat content: about 10 percent, more than milk, less than cream.“Because it’s fat-free?” she responded.“Do you know what they replace the fat with?” I asked.“Hmm,” she said, then lifted the carton and read the second ingredient on the label after skim milk: “Corn syrup.” She frowned at me. Then she set the carton back on the conveyor belt to be scanned along with the rest of her groceries... • From sea to plate: how plastic got into our fish
From sea to plate: how plastic got into our fishFrom sea to plate: how plastic got into our fish Eight million tonnes of waste plastic ends up in the sea each year. Fish eat it - and then we do. How bad is it for us? Susan SmillieTuesday 14 February 2017 17.04 GMTFirst published on Tuesday 14 February 2017 16.00 GMT It’s enough to make you cry over your moules frites. Scientists at Ghent University in Belgium recently calculated that shellfish lovers are eating up to 11,000 plastic fragments in their seafood each year. We absorb fewer than 1%, but they will still accumulate in the body over time. The findings affect all Europeans, but, as the most voracious consumers of mussels, the Belgians were deemed to be most exposed. Britons should sympathise – last August, the results of a study by Plymouth University caused a stir when it was reported that plastic was found in a third of UK-caught fish, including cod, haddock, mackerel and shellfish. Now, UK supermarkets are being lobbied to create plastic-free aisles by the campaign group A Plastic Planet, as a feature-length documentary, A Plastic Ocean, is released in Britain this week..... • Shoebox entertaining: how to throw dinner parties in the smallest of spaces
Shoebox entertaining: how to throw dinner parties in the smallest of spacesShoebox entertaining: how to throw dinner parties in the smallest of spaces BY AMY SWALES02 MAR 2017 SHARE ON FACEBOOK TWEET SHARE ON PINTEREST COMMENT The mere thought of throwing a dinner party immediately brings up tempting visions of canapés, pre-dinner cocktails, swanning round refilling wine glasses, and perhaps even a theme. A theme. However, the realities of city living can easily put you off: the tiny kitchens, the table for two and the distinct lack of a separate dining room (they exist, your parents will tell you) can make entertaining seem impossible. But don’t be disheartened, for we grilled three women who regularly host proper sit-down meals in their London non-mansions for their tips and tricks on throwing stylish dinner parties when you’re short on square feet....
