  • Local Collective Hackney: Brand copywriting and product naming
Local Collective Hackney: Brand copywriting and product namingA few months ago I helped with the branding and copy for Local Collective Hackney, a new pop-up shop and foodie delivery service in East London which emerged due to the increased demand for door-step delivered groceries during the lockdown. Coined some unique hamper names including 'The Green Grocer', 'The Citrus Basket' and 'The Heart of Hackney', and created website copy to brief. I worked alongside Cigdem, who created the visuals and minimalist new website. ~ https://localcollectivehackn
  • Article and Think Piece: Looking Beyond the Lockdown with GALA Festival
Article and Think Piece: Looking Beyond the Lockdown with GALA FestivalA month or so ago I wrote for GALA about what live music might look like after lockdown. Was a pleasure to [virtually] speak to Mafalda, Global Roots, Spun Out Agency's Caroline and Earth Music Agency Ltd's Naomi, about their experiences during lockdown and their predications for the scene beyond all this. “[Lockdown has] been two months now, and now the Black Lives Matter movement has begun again. I think these will forever be connected, not directly but it will always be an important part of

MA (Distinction) Film Studies. I specialised in African-American representation and cultural production, hip-hop, and stardom. My thesis mounted an argument regarding the "Business" of Queen Latifah and the politics of black cultural production in a post-hip-hop era/neoliberal America context. I have written papers on hip-hop cultural production, racial representation and stardom, including a piece on the "race conscious hip-hop-centric star strategies" of Will Smith and Eminem. This was was well received, graded at 85%, and I have plans to publish. This course included a placement module at Insight Film Festival, which was extended into the summer and I continued to work with Insight on an ad hoc basis. In light of this placement, I wrote a critical report regarding the aims and restrictions non-profit organisations face through marketing in the arts industry.

American Studies – First Class BA Hons I studied a range of compelling modules such as Hip Hop and Hollywood; a Hip Hop Lesson Plan I wrote as part of my assessment for this module is being included in a Rap Collection at Manchester Central Library (Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Centre). My other focuses included American Crime Fiction, Beat Writing, Visual Culture of the U.S Empire and American Film Studies. I wrote papers on the work of photographer Robert Polidori, the significance of Walker Evan's Cuba photographs in regards to U.S-Cuba relations, and the films of Spike Lee. My final year dissertation topic focused on the gender politics of Lil' Kim and Lauryn Hill, two influential and successful African-American female rap artists. I discussed how these apparently divergent figures intersect with similar, poignant issues in rap and black female gender politics, and by extension both were successful in inspiring uplift and empowerment to young black female audiences.
