MSc Maritime ArchaeologyThe University of Oxford

My love for the sea and background in Classical Studies have together inspired my master's degree in maritime archaeology, in which I focus on investigating the maritime cultural landscapes of the ancient Mediterranean as well as the region's sustained maritime cultural heritage and underwater archaeological remains. Weekly essays investigating a broad range of theoretical and practical topics have cumulated in longer pieces of research and writing exploring the presence of network dynamics amongst the archaic Greek cities of southern Italy and the importance of harnessing creative multimedia to credibly promote and democratise the discipline of maritime archaeology. My thesis paper investigates maritime cultural heritage and underwater archaeology on the Ionian coast of Calabria, Italy and proposes approaches for promoting the region's cultural resources to visitors and residents alike, with regenerative tourism, sustainable development and local community involvement as key pillars.

My degree focused on material culture and social life in the ancient Mediterranean, from Bronze Age Greece to Late Antiquity. In my third year, my research involved archaeological analyses of seaborne movement in the Minoan Aegean and Early Roman Empire, using maritime archaeological material in support of the latter. I familiarised myself with shipwreck databases and cargo amphorae types in preparation for a Masters' Degree in Maritime Archaeology. I also covered breadth of other material, including Ancient Greek and Roman history, pre-Socratic and Platonic philosophy; Roman and Byzantine art and archaeology; and Classical reception throughout European history.
