This record is warm and bright, ‘a retreat of positivity… with good times guaranteed’. Commissioned to illustrate this cover, Sophie drew on themes of Sun worship, nature, dance and summer-time atmosphere to reflect the fun and lightness in this record.4

Elaha Soroor provides vocals, drawing on her own experience of fleeing Afghanistan as well as the difficulties faced by other female artists.2

I hope the music conveys the strength and power of the human spirit, the bravery to risk everything for their families, the anger I feel at the response of the West, a lack of empathy, a lack of compassion. - Sophie Bass - The Black Peril, Soweto KinchSophie was commissioned to illustrate ‘The Black Peril’ by Soweto Kinch in October 2019. The record is a bold piece, inspired by the 1919 Race Riots - a period of extreme violent disorder and racial conflict in the wake of WW1, spanning the UK and the US. To create this artwork, Sophie delved into 1920s cartoons that often described the 'infectious' effect of black music on white audiences.
