About me
Suman Dhesi is a Mixed Media textiles designer specialising in Fashion fabrics and accessories. As a material-driven designer, her work explores the juxtaposition of advanced technology and traditional textile methods using selective materials and techniques. Material exploration and investigation is a crucial role within her work, creating each collection through extensive research into a variety of processes and materials. She uses unconventional approaches when constructing her pieces, combining numerous techniques to create a new surface.
Projects
  • Deceptively simple and functional
Deceptively simple and functionalDeceptively Simple and Functional explores the integration of traditional textile materials with non-traditional textile materials, using traditional textile techniques and non-traditional textile methods. The materials are designed to provide or enhance a specific function(s), these include Waterproofing, Thermal Insulation and Impact Protection. The project explored the potential of creating increased functionality in a textile through the integration of traditional and non-traditional textil
  • Motion
MotionExploring motion through experimentation and invention. Initial inspiration was taken from the Leonardo da Vinci Mechanics of Genius exhibition; a prominent theme throughout was the use of motion through his inventions. I undertook a series of scientific experiments to demonstrate motion within natural landmarks. This project was material driven; exploiting the effects of laser work, sonic welding, embellishing and traditional textile print techniques.
  • Structural Surfaces
Structural Surfaces Structural surfaces explore the surface qualities found within urban environments and interior spaces. These surface qualities will be explored in depth through scientific investigations in optics, to illustrate the movement of light. 3D models were created and inspired from initial imagery, which fuelled first-hand drawings. The focal point of every model was based around surface qualities in relation to light. Therefore, some models were submerged in water and others had a light source implemented within their structures. A combination of architectural structures, 3D models and scientific investigations influenced the drawing, material, design and colour selections. The collection uses a variety of techniques such as Print (screen printing, heat press and digital), Laser-work, thorough investigation and exploration into traditional and non-traditional materials. The application of this body of work is aimed at Fashion Mixed-Media, specifically fashion accessories/ embellishments, along with supporting fashion fabrics for a Spring Summer collection.
