Projects
  • baseline cover design
baseline cover designThis is a really old project. I was fresh out of University. Hans Dieter commissioned me to create a cover design illustrating the Herman Zapf quote 'Typography is fundamentally two dimensional architecture.' I was so scared! I worked with each word deconstructing it in layering and reprinting woodblock. Then used a photocopier to play with size and scale and layout by hand. It was printed litho. It won typographic awards from the ISTD. Old School. A pivotal moment in my early career.

I have worked in Higher Education for 25 years whilst developing my practice. Working for clients including The School of Life, The Hayward gallery, Random House Publishers, The ICA, I have also created research driven self Initiated and published work with collaborators including Iain Sinclair, The Science Museum, The British Library. My roots are in the craft of design and I have a special place for letterpress printing and printmaking combined with digital tools for communication. I have an illustration and graphic design background. With a love of typography and experimental image making spanning analogue and digital processes. I love telling stories and looking at our relationship to place historically and now. Archives have been a huge part of my practice working from them and creating new ones. In 2018 after designing running and leading courses and departments in London and Porto I took on the challenge of creating the first Masters course in graphic design for Falmouth University. Considering how the subject could be delivered online was a great challenge. In I wrote and designed and developed all the content with Bryan Clark and Stuart Tolley from transmission design. We kept a focus on flexible learning part time on line, global practice and exploring how the subject operates globally , socio- culturally and politically now and speculatively. The course is unique. A passion project. It allows people all over the world to study part time to collaborate to learn. It is totally different to teaching on campus. I love it. I am also setting up a press over the coming months to look at self publishing. I bought some type from Bill Naylor having worked at house of Naylor in 1997. A beautiful full circle. I am keen to develop new work and collaborations. A focus on my research has been about place and our relationship to it having worked a lot with Iain Sinclair. I have recently developed community based work about place in Southampton and Winchester. Taking a broad spectrum of local residents on a journalism bus to various locations to tell their stories about their relationship to their city. Working with key city decision makers to present these unheard stories. In a taught context one of my favourite projects was working with the Nepalese Elders in Winchester and students at Winchester school of art in language and skills swaps. I love teaching. I move making. I love collaborating. Working across commercial and self initiated research led projects. I am up for conversations.
