I graduated from Ravensbourne College of Art & Design with a BA Degree in Graphic Design and worked as a freelance illustrator and designer. Two years later I moved to New York and collaborated with clients such as Conran’s, Liz Claiborne Inc, the New York Times and the New York Transit Authority.
When I returned to England I diversified, working on anything from mural painting to Photoshop editing and illustration. I’ve researched, written, designed and illustrated a series of children’s historical activity books. Working for National Trust I produced historical interpretation signs and exhibition panels. I used my calligraphy skills in Body Shop promotions and illustrated packaging for Marks and Spencer. Other clients have included The Independent, the V&A Museum, the British Museum, and most recently The Royal Mint, for whom I have been engaged in coin design and packaging illustration. I am also creating historical illustrations and reconstructions for Karwansaray magazine publications.
I work in anything from linoleum to Adobe software and on projects as diverse as still lifes and coin design - you can see more on my website at williamwebb.org.uk and in my Behance folio at https://www.behance.net/William_Webb.
Projects
- Coin Design for the Royal Mint Chinese Lunar Year of the DragonThis was a paid competition I was invited to participate in by Lee Jones at The Royal Mint. The brief was to create a design to celebrate the 2024 Lunar Year of the Dragon (part of the Royal Mint's Lunar Year coin series). It had to be sensitive to Chinese culture and contain a British element, and also gain ministerial approval. Since Chinese dragons often inhabit watery places, this one is shown hovering over a Lake District inspired scene.
- Historical Reconstructions for Ancient Warfare, Ancient History and Medieval World: Culture & Conflict magazinesEditorial illustrations largely in watercolour, but sometimes enhanced in Photoshop, for various historical articles by sme's. Usually A4 or double page spreads, they involve some research but information is provided by the authors.
- Caricatures of PriceWaterhouseCoopers employees for Retirement EventsThis is a small selection of some caricatures created for retirement events at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Some illustrations include calligraphic limericks (written by the client). The process: the client supplies biographical information and photographic reference about the subject, which I then bring together into a witty summary of their life during their career at PWC.
