ADVICE NEEDED from Copywriters! What would you recommend as first steps for getting into copywriting with no notable experience?

I recently attended an online webinar about copywriting that I discovered on Dots and found really insightful. I will need to do my own research on the topic as it has floated in the background of my radar up until now.
Is there any advice I can get on what to research, where I might find more information, what to include in my portfolio, what to do to build up skills and/or practice, if I should aim to attain qualifications in copywriting, etc?

  • Well, I started selling radio advertising and had to learn copywriting by the seat of my pants. We had a nice copywiriting guide to follow, meanwhile. Later, I got a job with a boutique advertising agency.
  • Hi, I’m a junior copywriter who transitioned from a different industry. My advice is to write, write and write again. Your portfolio is the most important thing.

    Here’s what I did:
    - Write a blog on Medium or Substack
    - Find creative briefs online
    - Join a copywriting community (I would recommend Word Tonic as it’s specifically for Gen Z copywriters and also has copywriting briefs)

You can take a course on copywriting as well but it’s not a necessity. There’s free courses on YouTube to start with so you can understand some principles.
