Any advice on how to start building a design portfolio with little to no experience?

  • Hi Jessie, I'd say reach out to friends and family that may need some graphic design help. So if you know someone that started selling cakes in lockdown, why not offer to make them a logo! Things like that. Start small and build up - and hopefully people will get to know you through word of mouth and you can build up a portfolio like that.
    Good luck!
  • Hi Jessie, offering your services to fellow creatives for free is also a good way to get some work done and also perfect to gain recognition. Creating small stuff for free for those who lack design/illustrator skills and experience is also an amazing way to build relationships in the industry. Via skill-swaps & collaborations you can get loads of inspiration and ideas and produce some work that could go up on The Dots and your website.
  • @Anna Negrini thank you, I’ll definitely look into this!
  • @Ø Macioti thank you for the great advice, I’ll look into it!
  • Following the great advices below, some links you might find useful in you find difficult to come up with self initiated projects:
    - New Blood brief from D&AD https://www.dandad.org/en/d-ad-new-blood-awards/
    - fake brief: https://sharpen.design/, https://fakeclients.com/
    - volunteer online with We Make Change https://www.wemakechange.org/current-projects
  • You should develop self-proposed projects that match your area of interest. Also, keep in mind that's better to have a portfolio with a few awesome projects than a lot of mediocre ones – it's easy to be tempted to show everything when you still don't have that much work. Good luck! :)
  • Carry out personal projects similar to those you’d like to carry out for employers and expand as much as you’d like! If you give yourself fake briefs and show your talent, style and viewpoint you’ll be able to really catch other people’s attention even if you have nothing “official” to include!
