Breaking Into 3D & CGI – Should I Offer Free Work for Exposure?

Recently, I’ve expanded my skill set beyond my 25 years of graphic design experience by learning 3D modeling and CGI, particularly in the cosmetic industry. However, since this is a new skill and I don’t yet have any portfolio samples showcasing it, do you think it would be wise to offer free work to brands or their agencies for exposure?

I'm always against offering free work in graphic design, but this is a new era for me, and I'm struggling with what to do.

  • No! Do not do that!
I would start a TikTok account or any other platform and share your new skills.
Perhaps also tap into your network and see if they have freelance projects that might need these skills.
    All the best!
  • Hey Ali, I'd advise against offering free work to anyone, rather I would think of what an ideal brief would look like for me and try to conjure that up. You can ask ChatGpt to put a brief together for you or look at websites with creative briefs if you struggle to develop one yourself. From experience doing things that I enjoy in personal projects always tends to have a certain quality about it, it lets your personality come through which people tend to notice. Good luck! :)
