Can anyone advice on how much to charge for creating branding for a very small friend of a friends indie maker business?

She doesn’t have much of a budget but doesn’t want me to work for free, but I want to support a fellow indie small business maker. I don’t know where to start! Wish they taught this at uni!

  • Sometimes in life your there to help someone out, rescue the client “friend”. From experience I have day rates not all the time can clients or companies match the day rate.

To overcome this, would work with their budget and create a timeline excel sheet what needs to be produced in a time frame. That way you can agree how long you can spend on something to get produced.

Never know this indie brand might pick off, and could be on going client which you can always alter fees in the long term.
  • @Morphe Digital Design ha I love Dragons Den, great idea on the shares on a profit, or could be full payment on profit. I’m always up for having new things for a portfolio especially being an in house design you don’t get much verity! Also I really enjoy doing things like this to help others out, but it’s hard to say a price when they do want to pay you and you don’t want to scare them with a price.

Thanks so much for you advice really want to watch dragons den now ha!
  • @Paul Armstrong thanks so much for this advice. We are at the early stages so super good idea to get what else might be needed in the future looked down. Thanks for the advice and link very helpful
  • @Raafaye Ali thanks so much for the ace advice, like the idea of pay what you can and then have it as a pot that can be built up like klarna ha! I also do like cake!

    Super appreciate the reply
  • Depends what they really want/need. If you're doing Brand strategy, Brand messaging, Visual identity then you're looking at around 30-40 hours work - break it down into must have's and need to haves is my best advice and charge for that - you know your hourly rate and what you can/are willing to bend on for friends. Ultimately, it's a service and they should be willing to pay for work or walk away (unless there's a better deal to be done). • Is there any trades you could make from their skillset that might of been of use to you? even skills that arnt professional like they make a bad ass cake, can bake you some cooked goods once a month etc. Do you get alot of creative freedom to do what you like?

theres always pay what you can, split the cost over the course of a year, create a money pot which they can donate to which allows you to cover your bare minimums to keep the lights on. could be a probono donation pot, that then allows you to potentially do more projects you like. as they feed donations your able to nurture more creativity then even show case the projects that you have been able to help create utilising those donations.
