Can the community help me to come up with a new domain name? My name is Thomas James Smith (so generic to England) and all domains are taken

My current domain is itstomdesign.com which I made during uni. I now find it too informal (and weirdly grammatically incorrect). I'm also interested in writing and want to build that section of my site out and not be defined by a word such as 'design'. I'm struggling due to how generic my name is!! Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Website urls or domain names (as opposed to the name or title of a site, which is something else entirely) are thorny issues -- not least because so many likely names have been bought up by domain sellers, or bots, and are just sitting out there, unused.

But I think Robbie's advice to find a name that's unique and also somehow captures your style or approach makes sense, rather than trying to awkwardly cram your name into a domain. And, as always, smart use of SEO best practices will likely help people find your site more reliably than coming up with a domain name that includes all or part of your name. (I learned that the hard way with my own domain name, bdcwrites, which doesn't really tell anyone anything. Ouch.)

Finally: Do you go by Tom, or Thomas? The answer to that might help in this pursuit.

    Good luck!
  • @Peter Wright I know it sounds weird but there's something about 'creative' that I feel just doesn't sit well with me, and I have to absolutely love it to commit to it. Trying to think of a different adjective but perhaps I need to think out of the box entirely.
  • @Robbie Masters Definitely need a brainstorming session! It's a good idea to investigate other ways aside from my name, I was thinking something like createdbythomas.com but that's taken.
  • I would suggest branding yourself as a creative using a company name that’s unique and represents the look and feel of your work (list a few ideas and google them to make sure there aren’t any existing within similar industries). It’ll help you stand out and give you a professional edge. Then on your website you have an opportunity introduce yourself by name.
