  • Regards to being hired as a freelancer can go in different directions.

    1. Which being a designer/illustrator ec and have a agent or agencies represent you.

    2. Agencies/Recruitment in design example to name a few, you submit your portfolio and they send you jobs you wish to apply or short freelance projects:

    https://www.majorplayers.co.uk/

    3. Agencies/Recruitment can get you hired for days or weeks to work in design studios or advertising agencies to carry out work Or you can contact themself to be put on their freelance books.
    — Or work from home with lots and lots of online meetings.
  • I know this may not be popular, in the end you need to connect with people who have a need, and build a tribe/network, and gently sell to them. I find most work comes by recommendation.

Essentially you need a sales strategy and that's the hard bit, a marketing strategy (broad or niche) will shape and support your sales strategy, but it won't replace it.

Sites like instagram need a huge amount of work to support and grow a business on their own, sites like this and linkedin can generate contacts and open doors but it's a slow burn.

Bidding sites are just commodifying your offer/service and will mean your only strategy is price - and there will always be someone cheaper and more desperate in some part of the world.
  • Avoid bidding sites (Fiverr, 99Designs, Reedsy, etc) as they’re all vile. There aren’t many great platforms for freelancers that actually have reach.

UnderPinned is okay, though currently it’s more about having a job board than actually providing ways for clients and freelancers to fine one another.

Wishu is highly-recommended, though it only works through phone and is very obtuse – my experience isn’t great thus far.

The Dots is a good way to connect freelancers with professionals but many of the clients on here are... cheap, for lack of a better word.

And that’s kind of my experience in the last five years, sincere clients tend to work independently of those kind of site while people who are cheap (and thus aren’t interested in putting any effort into finding someone) sit on job boards, budding sites, and put out notes on here offering “collaborations.”
