Creative folks: how are you coping with unsuccessful job hunting and/or the struggle in finding freelance clients at the moment?

I found it particularly difficult these past few weeks to find work.
I keep applying to jobs and contact people that might be interested but I keep on being rejected. I know it's part of the process but I find it very unmotivating.

Do you guys have any tips to overcome this feeling?
Thanks in advance!

  • @flavia felipe Thanks Flavia! I'm actually currently learning about motion design and after effect animation, I'm not gonna lie - it's been quite a challenge but it's great to learn new skills! x
  • @Kerry Curl Thanks Kerry. I definitely feel the "a one day at a time" approach!
  • @Jonathan Withecombe Thanks Jonathan, I think the same!
Since I love branding design I've been doing a lot of "rebranding concept" and it's been great.
  • @Simon T Sounds great Simon, thanks for your message!
I joined Skillshare at the beginning of the 1st lockdown and it's been great. I'll have a look at Udemy's courses though :)
Thanks again and best luck for the future!
  • At the moment in a similar position, with facing redundancy at the end of March, so it's been a case of applying for jobs and speculative applications to companies I would like to work with. But it is hard to keep going when you get few replies and rejections, one thing I have done is look at online courses to brush up or get some knowledge of something new that might help further my career, specifically I did a UI/UX design on Udemy which was really good, and a good introduction to the theories behind UI and introduction to UX and using Adobe XD.

Udemy were doing money off offers on their courses a few weeks back so it might be worth keeping an eye on there to see if they do any further offers if there's anything on there that you think might be useful in terms of new skills or just to stay on top of new skills/processes. There's always Coursera too if you want to look at related courses or maybe something different entirely.
  • Personal work and just plugging away at trying to find something. I'm a massive fan of Illustrator so I'm trying to use that every day, working on redesigning film posters and team badges... for me it doesn't help that it seems a designers job isn't just that anymore... it's animation, copywriting, web design etc etc etc.
  • As others have said throwing myself in to personal work and seeing this as an opportunity to make the work I want to make without any compromises. There’s also a bit of a one day at a time approach. It’s a tricky one to navigate when so much feels (is) unknown...
  • i look at unsuccessful applications as practice and i focus on personal projects to add to my portfolio in the mean time. if you’re really passionate about a client/brand/project, do it anyway, what do you have to lose? ;)
