Does anyone have good / bad experiences with a personal / creative career coach?

Would you recommend it? What did you get out of it? How did you find the right fit?

I'm considering getting some coaching to help me identify direction but not sure where to start.

  • Hey Sabina,

I’ve had coaching before and the reason why I felt it worked was because I was sure on what I wanted to achieve. You also seem like you know what you want to achieve, I’d say go for it. But also ask yourself if a mentor would be more useful right now than a coach. I see coaches as people who help you improve on something and mentors more as guide who you can turn to for advice.

    Hope that’s helpful.
  • Hello Sabina,

I've met a few coaches in the past. They actually reached out to me and I thought it would be interesting to meet them. I think before you take a coach, it's important to meet them even if only virtually and have a chat. I met one for example that said things that I felt were a no go coming from a coach and others where I had an instant connection and felt they could really take me to great places. I've not ended up doing the coaching as I felt it might be more beneficial at a later stage. As some people suggested, it really depends on what you want to get out of it and what you are looking for.

  • I have had mixed experiences. Some were my fault as I wasn't specific enough in what I wanted mentoring help with and others resulted from not having the right chemistry between me and the mentor - despite how amazing I thought they could be.

I have also had great mentors who get me, understand why I want to learn from them, my personality. And ultimately always feel confident after our talks with clearer direction. So based on this - I would say yes! I would recommend having a mentor.

My advice would be before you spend money on coaching/mentorship etc, try to write a list of everything that you want to learn this year and you may find actually you need different mentors for different things. Then try to find the right mentor who has achieved what you want to learn i.e. Leadership, Technical Design Skills, Management, Public Speaking, etc. and have a conversation with them to see if you 'click'. Half the battle is being able to talk to someone and feel understood.
  • Hi Sabina,

I can definitely recommend coaching, but finding the right one is the key here. It's always hard to recommend, because we are all so different.

Every decent coach will give a15-30 mns free session to see if you are right for each other. Go coach shopping:-) I know it sounds daft, but that's what I would do if I wouldn't have a personal recommendation.
  • Like dating, finding the right coach is not easy. My first one was too bossy, the second one blamed me for everything and I'm on the hunt for the third one!

Check if they are certified, definitely do a initial call to see if you are compatible. Check the contact to see if you can stop and get refund midway if you think you are not getting what you want.
  • Hi Sabina. Great question. I’ve had a coach for nearly six months now (2 sessions per month) and the insights I have gathered are immense! It’s helped me in business, personal development, mindset and many other areas. I’d highly recommend :)
