Hello guys, as a photographer how do you get media press pass for a fashion show when you're not sent by a magazine?

  • Hello Moea, from my personal experience I recommend you contacting them directly with a brief and honest explanation of who you are and what you want. I’ve gotten to shows in Paris by simply asking for it. (I got invitations, not press passes, but still) Just make sure to have your portfolio properly curated and be concise :) best luck!
  • You can always reach out directly to the PR agency!

If you are hoping to submit your photos somewhere after the show, or have a following, it's worth a shot (excuse the pun)

Not all photographers at events (fashion or not) are sent by magazines.

Though it is good to make sure you state a clear benefit for them to have you there.

If your motive is that you are hoping to build your portfolio, then it could be good to be candid in your email to the Press Officer about this, but you could offer to give them the photos – this could open up future opportunities too.

I hope that this helps and I hope you get a spot – if not, I always think it's worth rocking up on the day and wrangling your way in (it's not unheard of and once you're in you're in ;) )

    Best! Robyn x
  • Hey Moea,
This isn't really done. Normally the PR from the show will have a list of press photographers from magazines and newspapers who are invited. There's limited space so they don't open it up to other press photographers. It also depends on the show. Some smaller brands may be inclined if you have an outlet for the work however even thats difficult if you don't have a relationship with them. What did you want to shoot and at what kind of show? Also might be worth looking at NUJ as I know they allow you access to certain press things but I don't know the ins and outs of that.

  • Hey there Moea!
Great to see you using our Asks Hub :-)
Just a quick tip, you'll get a better response with your Asks if you tag relevant professions on your post. For example 'Photographer', 'Make-up Artist' or 'Creative Director'.
Hope that helps and have a lovely week,
    Cathy x
