Hey everyone! If a client published (online/print) photos from a shoot we did, can I then post the same on my socials & portfolio? Thanks

- What does your contract say?
- Hi Enid,I see you are in Dubai – I don’t know the local legislation where you are, it may not necessarily be as here in the UK.In the UK the copyright (IP) belongs to the Photographer, in the UK (in theory at least) you need a licence from the Photographer, that mostly will depend on the agreement between the client and photographer, as a stylist you can’t take that decision yourself unless you can claim to hold some of the IP in the work, then it will be a joint agreement.I know of countries where (as in the UK about 35 years ago) copyright belongs to the commissioner of the work (usually the client). You need to know the local legislation relevant to the shoot. In the UK I have had circumstances where models have used images with out permission, next time they came to work for that particular client they found themselves NDA’d up to their eyeballs. As has already been said check the paperwork and get it in writing.BestGavin
- Ask the client. If you want to work for them regularly. Some really don't like it
- @Enid W. whenever you are working with any client make sure you a contract in place outlining what the do's and don'ts are. Without a contractual agreement it can lead to unnecessary disputes and possibly open yourself up to being exposed along with your work. Protect yourself always with a signed agreement / contract. Hope this helps.
- You can't share the pictures only if you have a signed agreement with them disallowing you to share them. Have a happy week!
- @Niko Mrt absolutely! I think it also depends what is stipulated in a contract, if there even is one. I find there rarely is, but sometimes the client requests full rights.
- @Amy Ruse as a photographer you own the pictures, not the client, and actually it’s up to you to specify how for what and how long your pics are used for. Just thought I’d put that here to remind ppl, that our creative work is our intellectual property😊
- Hey! I would say absolutely yes, as long as you’ve waited for them to be published, I will usually re-share and add to my grid. If you feel unsure you could always ask, I ask clients if I can use them in my portfolio, I’ve never heard a “no”.
