Hey! Would you give me some portfolio feedback? :)

I'm a graduate designer and self-taught illustrator, struggling to get hired.
Any first thoughts/advice/recomendation are highly appreciated! :)

  • I’m pretty sure you’ve shared this before, and I’ll give you the same advice I did then: collate your work. There is very little difference between your “design” and “illustration” so why are they separate?
  • Hi Diana, nice illustrations :) I can only suggest to keep your style consisted and do a lot of work, even personal stuff, and keep publishing them on different socials. When you have a solid portfolio, start sending emails to AD. Good luck! :)
  • Diana, I like your illustrations, share your email id if I could find some work references in my connection
  • Echoing most of the comments here - it may be useful to give more information about the projects themselves and particularly about yourself. Tell your story in such a way that relays your passions, clients/people will be inspired by that if its well written and honest. I also agree that it would be better to bring your two portfolios together.

I also think you should lead with the real world applications of your designs and illustrations. Whilst you have this to some degree I personally think it could be bolder in that regard. Clients and agencies will want to know what you can offer them in terms of design collateral and that you have an understanding of how to create marketing assets etc... and whilst large image of your illustrations are great they should be secondary to the real-world application, that's what clients and agencies will be looking for.

Finally, the pages on your design folio look a little cramped. I'd let them breathe and give them more importance with more white space. Your illustration portolio is better presented in that regard. Good luck!
  • As someone who did it back in university (as a designer and writer) I would suggest having two portfolios is a misstep - especially when both include basically the same thing. Better to bring all your work together in one place. Cargo Collective makes it pretty hard to have a bad looking portfolio, as simplicity is key, so as a website it looks fine. However, I would have another look at your about section. The one on your illustration site is better than the design one. When you are selling yourself using your own name, it pays to be a little more personal in your introductions, so "Originally from Argentina, I’ve graduated in 2012 ..." is better than " Hi there! I’m Diana, a creative..." You don't really want to say "hi" and the early introduction of professionally relevant personal information is more interesting. So, overall, look fine but you might want to have another pass over some of the text, and bring your work together in a cohesive place.
  • I love your illustrations and the format of your portfolio looks good to me (though I'm not a graphic designer but a textile and colour, material and finish designer). Have you thought about applying your illustrations to textiles or products? Or maybe building a website for your work with a portfolio tool like semplice? There are some really inspiring examples of portfolios on semplices showcase section of their website which might interest you. I found it helpful anyway! Good luck!
