Hi, Could anyone recommend an umbrella company in the UK?

I am working as a sole trader at the moment, but I believe I am missing lots of opportunities because I don't trade as a limited company. I would like to learn more about working under an umbrella company and would like to find one, that is quite flexible.

  • @Alex Bright Thanks a lot for the advice. I heard about the IR35 tax law but was not aware it makes such a big difference. I definitely, need to read more about it.
  • @ɐɹoᗡ ɐuu∀ ˥ opening a limited company seemed more responsibility and paper work, but I guess you are right, that it would be better to find a good accountant instead. Thanks a lot for advice ;)
  • Just be careful if this is a long-term plan. The IR35 tax law comes into affect soon which prevents companies "employing" people through LTD companies. As an agency, we have just spent the last month clearing up terms with our clients who are inisisting we also adhere to the rules (even though small businesses are exempt) so our freelancers are now having to either join our payroll or bill as self employed individuals. I expect it will be a year of clearing up so just don't commit to big umbrella fees and sure all will be well.
  • Hi Sigita,

I would highky recommend you to make a limited company. You would spend a few hunder pounds more on accounting but would easily get it back by expenses what is way more strict if you work with an umbrella company.

Umbrella's work on the same way than recruitment companies so they always take an x% of your rates.
  • parasolgroup.co.uk are really decent and great in replying to emails. They have options for sole traders, freelancers and limited company set up. Although if you go full LTD an accountant might be cheaper in the long run...
  • Hi Sigita,

I thought you were actually looking for an umbrella vendor (just reading the intro... :-) If you are (also), I'd highly recommend checking some of these out: https://www.wired.co.uk/article/best-umbrella-uk (I highly recomend getting a proper one - who hasn't experienced the frustration of a flimsy €5 one?!).

Otherwise, on a serious note, I still have a UK Ltd running (Glocalise) that I haven't been using much recently (I'm based in Germany, but it's ive - at least til May 2021). The aim was actually to create an ad-hoc freelance creative agency, after having worked as a freelancer/contractor myself for some time. I'm actually finalising our website today (or trying to) - would be interested to get your feedback, and discuss a collaboration (i.e. via calendar.x.ai/thomas-siddons).

    Cheers, Tom
  • Parasol and Danbro - it's been awhile since I last used them so you might have to look into before registering.
