How can I start earning and get into the design industry whilst studying?

I'm a London based Graphic designer currently studying BA (hons) Graphic Design. At this stage i want to dive into the industry and start looking for clients however, i am not sure where to start from. Any advice?

  • This is probably not what you want to hear but I got myself through 2 degrees by working in bars and clubs. It helped me to have work in a seperate mental space to study - it was consistamt and I had control over my income and I had to be professional, but most importantly I had to learn people skills. Not just how to talk to people but to manage them, deal with conflict and drunks, present myself with confidence and authority when needed and sometimes humility. 30 years later I use the same skills in prresentations and pitches, negotiating with clients and sometimes having to act with grace and candour when things go wrong. I also had a lot of fun.
  • Hi Asim,

I managed to get my first part-time design job whilst studying at University. This was a great way to hone my skills and gain industry insights.

The job description said they were looking for a junior designer with a degree. At the time, I didn't have one. However, I thought I'd give it a go! I managed to get the job which was amazing.

Try to apply to different positions and contact the employer personally if you can. A personal approach is best rather than vague blanket outreach.

    Best wishes,
    Abigail
